A raceway-mounted metal backlit sign is usually a set of individual dimensional channel letters — the classic 3D backlit sign look, built from aluminum returns with a brushed or powder-coated finish — wired together inside the raceway. It works with either lighting style: front-lit, where an acrylic letter face glows in your brand color, or halo-lit (reverse-lit), where an opaque metal face stays dark by day and the light washes the wall behind it at night.
Mount surface: almost any wall — brick, EIFS, textured stucco, even uneven block — since the raceway carries the letters and wiring, not the wall itself.
Best for: leased storefronts you can't drill into, fast turnarounds, signs that may need to relocate.
Watch for: an unpainted raceway shows as a gray bar behind the letters — always color-match it to your fascia.

Mount surface: storefront glass, curtain wall, or any facade with no solid letter-mounting substrate — the panel itself becomes the mounting surface.
Best for: mixed brick, stone or stucco facades that need one uniform backdrop, and lobby or reception branding.
Watch for: you're adding a visible panel shape to the wall — size and paint match need to disappear into the facade.

They are the same thing. A reverse-lit (or halo-lit) sign has LEDs mounted behind solid metal or acrylic letters, so the light washes the wall and the letter faces stay opaque. The result is a soft halo outline — the look most people mean by illuminated letter signs or halo lit letters — rather than a glowing face.
Halo-lit or front-lit channel letters — which should I choose?
Halo-lit letters read as premium and understated, and work best on a clean wall with a few inches of standoff. Front-lit channel letter signs push far more light and stay legible from the road, so they suit storefronts set back from traffic.
